Last night, the world watched as the Daytona Speedweeks come closer to the big race. A constant battle between the fastest drivers in the nation to get ahead. Dale Earnhardt Jr. went into this ready to win. Not only was this an important race to set him up to start in the big race on Sunday, but this was the anniversary of his father’s crash at Daytona that took his life. Dale Sr. will always be remembered, but his son wants to do his best to keep the legacy going.
After winning the race last night, Earnhardt told NBC Sports, “It’s real special. I was thinking about that. I try not to make too big a deal. I’ve told all you guys in interviews we’ve done how much I like people to remember Dad, talk about Dad. It really warms my heart to see the stuff on social media and so forth. That’s probably my best way to gauge the reaction to a day like this. You see a lot of people mention him, even the (Atlanta) Braves and all that stuff. It’s pretty cool.”
“I’m guilty of daydreaming a little bit about winning this race tonight because of the day. That was special to me. Glad nothing bad happened, that we didn’t tear our car up, because that would have been embarrassing on a day like this.”
With Earnhardt starting third, we hope he can take the win for his third Daytona 500 win. He definitely has some tough competition, but we will be here rooting for the most popular NASCAR driver to take the W! The race starts on Sunday at 1:00pm EST. Tune in and cheer for Jr. with us. Here’s a video of him taking the win and what he said afterwards.
