How To Repair and Retread $1000 Tires

Airless tires are said to be the tires of the future, and they are beginning to pop up in more and more applications. One of the things believed to be prohibiting them from being more widely used is the price, which can run over $1,000 per tire. The wheels, or “twheels” as they’re called, take the whole concept of air in a tire out of the picture and instead use a series of strong bands to join the tire tread to the wheel.

In this video we see what might be the perfect remedy to that problem: retreading! This technician spends a great deal of time and effort making sure the used tire is in the best possible condition to apply a new tread. He very carefully prepares the old tire with what appears to be an adhesive compound, then assembles the tread itself before mating the new tread and the old center section. Unlike traditional retreading, which can be hazardous, this method applies a whole new tread section, as if the twheel were brand new.

Hopefully the ability to retread these awesome new tires will drive the price down and allow them to reach more of the automotive market, since they’re said to be basically indestructible and obviously can’t go flat!
