Legend Bob “Weatherman” Steinberger The Man Who Controls The Baja Races Passes Away

Every once in a while, you come across an important figure in a community who finds their way to legendary status and when you ask the Baja community about Bob “Weatherman” Steinberger, there’s a good chance that you’ll end up getting an answer that’s filled with respect and admiration. It seems like every way that you turn, there’s more praise for Bob who was a beloved figure in the off-road community. Unfortunately, due to a long battle with cancer, the Weatherman has passed away.

Bob is described as a pioneer of sorts as he took to the top of Mt. Diablo during the SCORE Baja 500 and Baja 1000, armed with his radio equipment to provide a service that, until now, the world of Baja hadn’t experienced. Bob would act as a spotter, watching what was going on in the race and sending help where appropriate, acting as a sort of father figure and mentor to everyone who would participate in the races.

Bob also founded a company that went by the name of “PCI Race Radios,” an operation whose main goal was to provide radios and GPS units to racers, further intertwining the Weatherman into the world of off-roading as he could now pretty much ride along with the competitors as they blasted their way through the desert.

It’s rare to come across someone who seems to be so widely appreciated which it seems like Bob was and he will be truly missed. If one thing could be done to honor someone like this, it would be to shape our actions to try and help out as many people as he did, making our communities a better place.

Our condolences go out to all of the Steinberger family and everyone who the weatherman was able to reach out and touch during his tenure as an off-roading legend who even managed to find his way to the hall of fame.
