The Strip at Las Vegas Motorsports Park Making Progress on Four-Wide Expansion

Following in the footsteps of the hugely popular Four Wide Nationals held each spring at zMAX Dragway in Concord, NC, The Strip at Las Vegas Motorsports Park has doubled the number of lanes and will become the second track in the nation to run four wide races on a national event scale. This isn’t exactly news for those who follow the NHRA even casually, as work started on the expansion a couple of months ago. In fact, when we were in Vegas for the Street Car Super Nationals back at the end of 2017, we weren’t allowed on the right side of the track due to the trenches that had been dug for the timing equipment wiring and water drainage.

This footage, however, is new and shows just a portion of the work that’s gone into the facility, which is owned by Bruton Smith, who also owns zMAX Dragway. To ensure all the lanes are as close to equal as possible on raceday, the existing two lanes were torn up and will poured fresh, part of that process being shown here as crews and equipment work through the night and day prepping and pouring the right lane. The time lapse style video offers a unique look at the process, speeding up hours or work into just a couple of minutes. This equipment is state of the art and should give Vegas four of the best possible lanes for the racers to compete on, and with some 44,000 horsepower screaming through the Nevada desert, expect fans to flock to the track in even greater numbers than before.

The crews have until April to finish the project, though it would be a good idea to get the track done as quickly as possible so there can be some racing done on the green track before the first National Event rolls into town for the Denso Auto Parts NHRA Four-Wide Nationals on April 6-8th. That date will put the Vegas four wide event just three weeks ahead of the NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX. Both facilities will host their fall events in the traditional two-wide format. With those events being part of the Countdown to the Championship, so the points format needs to follow that of the other Countdown events. Check back for more updates on the progress!
