The Twin Turbo Yetti Truck Doesn’t Back Down From Any Import

Import vs Domestic: World Cup Finals, held late in the fall each year at Maryland International Dragway, brings cars from all around the world to compete against the baddest hotrods form the US. As you might imagine, this brings some truly wicked rides out of the woodwork, many of which we don’t get to see often here in the states.

The race also brings some of the more unique racecars… and race trucks from the US out to do battle, including the Yetti, a badass twin turbo Ford F150 Lightning that puts in work on the quarter mile. The truck, which is powered by a 400 CID small block Ford that’s being force-fed many cubic feet of air by twin 88mm turbochargers. The engine is backed by a TH400 transmission to send the power to the rear tires, which bite hard on the super-sticky MDIR surface.

You can see the truck works really well with the rear squatting and the nose lifting toward the sky. The truck lays down a string of runs deep in the seven second zone with a best of 7.12, with all of the passes tripping the beams at right around 190 MPH. That’s pretty impressive considering the truck is shaped like a brick and looks like it would be fairly heavy, even taking into consideration that the nose and doors look to be made of lightweight fiberglass.

One thing about this video that impressed me was how long the driver, Jimmy Dolan, was able to keep the truck on the 2-step during the staging process without the transmission and torque converter overheating. With turbo cars especially, sitting on the chip like that for several seconds causes a lot of heat in the driveline, often resulting in tiresmoke or burning up the internals in the gearbox. However, something in Dolan’s combo works to keep it cool enough o still run killer times after sitting on the line for what has to seem like minutes on end for the man behind the wheel.
