This 1300HP Boosted Dodge Charger is Nuts! Crazy Restomod Project
There are custom builds, and then there are builds that take things to a completely different level of custom, like this insane 1968 Charger build from The Roadster Shop. The project came to TRS as an unfinished project, and the shop was given basically free reign and all the time they needed to just crush the build, and you can see in the video below just how incredibly over-the-top this project really is.
Starting underneath the body, the chassis is a hand-built chromoly tube structure that actually lengthens the wheelbase by five inches over stock. That wasn’t just done for appearance, though, as they needed to make room for the Viper V10 powerplant. And speaking of the engine, there’s plenty of custom work going on there too, thanks to the amazing talents of Tom Nelson and his staff at Nelson Racing Engines. The bullet is a stock cubic inch Gen II Viper pullout that is force fed by twin 67mm Precision turbochargers. While it would probably be capable of producing over 2,000 horsepower in a max effort application, Nelson has the combo tuned to 13 PSI of boost, which should be safe to run on pump gas and still make 1,300 and 1,100 ft/lbs of torque.
The suspension is all custom as well, featuring TRS-fabbed uprights, half-shafts, tubular control arms and trick cantilever-style upper shocks.
On the outside, the mods are both subtle and effective. The roof has been chopped an inch and a half and the front wheel openings were moved forward 4 inches to accommodate the longer engine bay. The hood and fenders were also stretched to fit the Viper powerplant. More subtly, the front and rear fenders were widened a bit, accentuating the Charger’s coke-bottle shape when viewed from above. Capped off by custom front and rear valences and a small deck spoiler, the car is an absolute work of art and is the epitome of what is possible when a shop with the talent and skill of The Roadster Shop has the time and budget to really throw everything – including the kitchen sink – at a project.
