#24 Jeff Gordon Retires – One Last Championship!

Jeff Gordon is a name that everybody knows. Whether you like NASCAR or not, he is an American icon. This weekend, he races his last race in the Spring Cup Series and has a chance to make it the best race of his career. He has the chance to take home his fifth Cup Championship. This would be the greatest walk-off in racing history. Do you think he can pull it off this weekend?

Jeff’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series debut was at Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1992. This was the first race of the NASCAR legend, and the last race for the greatest NASCAR legend of all time; Richard Petty. Jeff Gordon and Richard Petty now share places on Top 3 lists of most wins, poles and top-five finishes. Petty takes the #1 spot on each of these, but did Petty realize he was sitting by the next generation of NASCAR legend in 1992 when this picture was taken? Probably not.

At his final race in 1992, the King gave all of his competitors, including Gordon, a commemorative money clip. 23 years later, Petty gave Gordon a dollar for every Sprint Cup series win to fill that very money clip. He also gave him one of his iconic Charlie 1 Horse cowboy hats with his signature on the brim. Petty says that he has one more dollar waiting just in case #24 takes the win this weekend.

There aren’t many staples in our society like NASCAR. Jeff Gordon is one of the biggest names in NASCAR and it is sad to see him go. I think it is time for Jeff to take a break and enjoy watching his two children, Ella and Leo, grow up. With 796 consecutive starts, nobody has raced more times than him consecutively. Gordon is the Richard Petty for my generation. I, for one, am rooting for #24 this weekend as he tackles his last race. Godspeed Jeff. #24ever
