Richard Petty's New 1969 Camaro
While he spent most of his illustrious, record-laden career behind the wheel of Mopars and Pontiacs on the high-banked speedways of the NASCAR circuit, Richard “The King” Petty also has an affinity for Chevys , especially those of the sleek custom persuasion.
During his decades-long career, Petty never wheeled a Camaro on the track, but the winningest driver in NASCAR history did spend some time behind the wheel of a couple of Bowtie rides and always had strong working relationship with GM both as a driver and a car owner, so it’s not a stretch to think he developed a love for the iconic first generation Camaro over the years. However, Richard Petty couldn’t just drive any old Camaro, so the guys from Continental Tire had a certain crew of customizers from the West Coast put a few custom touches on this 1969 model to make it really stand out and fit the image of the legendary driver.
The car is sprayed with a great looking finish that is a sort of cross between matte and gloss and a cool yellowish-orange racing stripes. The car is riding on a great looking set of wide custom wheels that tuck nicely under the fenders and are wrapped in Continental tires with custom printed graphics. There are some nice subtle touches, such as the custom air dam that really gives the Camaro’s trademark nose a nice, aggressive facelift without being over the top.
Under the hood is a an LS-based engine built by the guys at Petty Motorsports. We don’t have any specs on the engine, but with the car being destined for cruising, it don’t seem likely it’s an all-out build, but likely has heads, a custom cam and a few other mods to bump the horsepower to a level to back up the car’s awesome appearance.
You can tell Petty and his grandson who joined him for the reveal are stoked with how the car turned out and can’t wait to get behind the wheel and take it for a spin. Hopefully THAT video will surface soon too!
