When it comes to carrying out maintenance items on your car, like changing the oil, there’s lots of information out there that can confuse or mislead even people who are experienced under the hood.

A perfect example of this is the idea that you need to change your oil every 3,000 miles. Ok, sure, if you have a car that you’re beating on, maybe that’s not a bad idea, but otherwise, it could be wasteful.

In fact, this scientist working on behalf of General Motors argues that with today’s technology, a 3,000 mile oil change is simply a waste.
