Ever wonder how they have perfect lines on a two tone wheel?

I’ve always been fascinated by machine shop equipment. Ever since I was a kid, I have loved to sit and watch these machines, some of which are massive in size, spin, cut, and grind away at metal with a level of precision few can appreciate unless they’ve used the machines themselves. I wouldn’t have anticipated using a machine like this lathe was the best way to customize a set of wheels, but it turns out, if you know what you’re doing at the machine’s controls, you can certainly do just that as you can see in the video below.

Keep in mind, this machine is fully hand operated. Other than the spindle that the wheel is mounted on, everything else is being controlled by the operator’s own hands. Not only does that mean this guy has all the confidence in his works, but also that he is so familiar with the controls that he is willing to risk ruining a wheel that likely cost several hundred, if not even in the thousands of dollars. All it would take is one slight miscalculation or slip of the hand and the wheel will have an irreparable groove dug into its surface.

However, the operator makes so such mistake, instead cleanly and smoothly knocking the coating off of the surface of the spokes, leaving a cool two-tone finish that will set these wheels apart from others of the same design.

It’s almost mesmerizing to watch the finish disappear as the operator moves the carriage back and forth, effortlessly exposing the bare metal underneath the outer coating. After the process is finished, the raw metal will need to be coated with some kind of clear coat-type finish to keep it from rusting or oxidizing and ruining the wheels appearance. With such a unique look, you wouldn’t want to let something like that happen and cause you to have to start all over again with new wheels.
