Fan Footage Shows Pieces of Top Fuel Car Raining Down in the Stands After it Disintegrated Approaching 300 MPH

Yesterday, we reported on a freak accident from this past weekend at the NHRA Midwest Nationals. In this incident, Leah Pruett would make her pass down the track, when all of a sudden, her car would decide to self-destruct. As the torque from the rear wheels began to lift the chassis, eventually, the car would split in half.

As the story would be written, Pruett would be able to walk away from the incident without any major injury. Even though she went airborne, the capsule that she was inside of was plenty to keep her safe as the machine roared toward 300 mph before breaking into pieces.

One thing that wasn’t so clearly shown in the angle that the NHRA managed to capture was exactly what happened to the debris from the car. This isn’t something that happens frequently so the cameras just weren’t in a position to show the debris flying. On the broadcast, we saw Pruett flying through the air in slow motion. However, videos later emerged that would show the incident from the stands and let’s just say that the viewpoint was entirely different.

Almost got hit with some car parts…

Following the disintegration of the car, pieces would end up going airborne. In fact, a sizable chunk of the front of the car would fly through the air and end up landing in the stands. Luckily, it does appear as if everybody was able to get out of the way and there were no injuries reported. However, flying race car parts were definitely something that these fans weren’t readily expecting to have come their way when spectating the race.

Below and above, videos allow us to take our seat in the stands, watching as parts come raining down. At the end of the day, this is why they have the warnings at the front gate and the waiver that everybody has to sign after they read it over. You never know when something is going to go down in between those walls that ends up exiting the racing surface!
