Ford Has Contracted Rivian To Build The First All Electric Lincoln

Over the past year or so, there has been growing interest in the electric truck startup, Rivian. Those following the electric market couldn’t help but wonder where they would land. Would they be absorbed by a bigger automaker with the funds to make things happen? Would they throw their hat in the ring to try to compete with the big boys?

It looks like we can expect to see a little bit of both.

The Rivian-Ford Collaboration

In a recent announcement, we learn that Rivian will be implementing their concepts into Ford’s wheelhouse. Ford has confirmed what most had already suspected. Rivian and Ford will be collaborating on a fully-electric vehicle. This vehicle will be based on Rivian’s skateboard platform and don the Lincoln name.

In a statement, Rivian’s CEO mentioned wanting to pair their tech with “Lincoln’s vision for innovation and refinement.”

It’s unclear if the relationship will be limited to Lincoln or not, in the long run. What we do know is that we will be able to expect some sort of SUV from the luxury automaker. As of now, it doesn’t appear as if the collaboration will include the Ford brand. However, it could very well end up moving that direction in the future. Ford and Lincoln, both owned by the Ford Motor Company, have been known to share platforms from time to time.

Lincoln is another brand that is aiming to take on a more electrified future. With developments like these consistently emerging, it leaves us to wonder about the use of fossil fuels in the future of motoring.

Rivian Still on Track to Launch Their Own Products

It was also confirmed that the collaborative SUV is a “Very different product” from Rivian’s SUV. The Rivian R1T pickup truck and R1S SUV are expected to launch at some point this year.

Reports say that we can expect to see the Lincoln SUV come 2022.
