The Ford Transit will get some revised styling, added configurations, and greater comfort when it is facelifted for 2020. Some of the key updates to the cargo and passenger van include a new, standard 10-speed automatic transmission for improved efficiency and available all-wheel drive that provides a more sure-footed ride in poor weather.
Furthermore, the 2020 Transit will also get a nearly new engine house, with only the top-spec 3.5L EcoBoost V-6 carrying over. A naturally aspirated 3.5L sixer with both direct and port injection takes its place as the base V-6, replacing the outgoing port-injected 3.7L. The new engine will almost certainly outpace the 275 hp and 260 lb-ft of its predecessor—expect about 300 hp and 280 lb-ft.
Also new will be a surprisingly tiny 2.0L turbodiesel I-4, which replaces the 3.2L Power Stroke I-5. Reportedly, the little diesel is similar to the powerplant found in the overseas Ranger Raptor, where it makes 210 hp and 369 lb-ft. The Ranger’s sequential-turbo diesel beats out the Power Stroke’s 185 hp and 350 lb-ft, although Ford has yet to announce official figures for the engine’s Transit application.
There will be a long list of functional upgrades to go along with the mechanical ones. A standard 4G LTE Wi-Fi modem will appear on the Transit, as well as all of Ford’s other commercial vehicles. Furthermore, the van will get standard automated emergency braking, post-collision braking, automatic high beams, and lane-keeping assist, improving safety. Available adaptive cruise control, blind spot monitoring, parking assist technologies, and split-view front and rear cameras enhance the 2020 Transit’s convenience factor, as does an optional power-sliding door on both passenger and cargo vans.
Styling inside and out has been improved as well—an available SYNC 3 tablet-style infotainment system and added interior storage join a new front fascia with available HID headlamps. And for the first time, the U.S. Transit will be available in a crew van configuration, with two rows of seating and a large cargo area, and a three-seat front row will be available too.
The 2020 Ford Transit passenger wagon and cargo van will go on sale later this year, with more powertrain specifics to be determined.
