Riding The Bumper For The WIN! Mustang Sends It!

Ladies and gentlemen, THIS is how you launch a race car!

NMRA Limited Street competitor Jay Misener brought his root beer Fox Body to the NMCA/NMRA Super Bowl at Route 66 Dragway in Joliet, IL and put on one hell of a show! Misener, lined up in the near lane, bumped his stick shift Mustang into the beams and put the throttle on the floorboard.

What happened next has to be broken down pretty thoroughly to truly be appreciated, so I’m going to do my best to explain why this particular wheelstand is so badass. When Jay dumped the clutch, the nose of the car rocketed toward the sky, but it didn’t get high enough to drag the bumper, which can upset the car’s balance and unload the rear tires, leading to major problems. As long as the car is still hooked up and tracking relatively straight, There’s no real reason to lift, so Misener kept his foot on the floor.

Here’s where things get really interesting though. As mentioned, Jay’s Fox is a stick shift car, and generally, when you grab a gear while the nose is in the air, the front end drops. However, Jay manages to shift gears so quickly that it only serves to pop the nose even higher in the air.

So now he’s got the nose in the air and the car’s in second gear, but starts drifting toward the centerline just a tad. So continuing to just be a total badass, you can hear Misener blip the throttle just enough to bring the nose down ever so gently, allowing him to begin easing the car back into the groove.

Jay grabs third gear flawlessly and continues to lay into the throttle, the RPM’s screaming as the car continues toward an eventual 9.68 elapsed time through the quarter mile at just a tick under 140 MPH. And that is how you lay down a wicked stick-shifted quarter mile pass at the Super Bowl of Drag Racing!
