Tesla Is Building The ‘World’s Biggest’ Lithium-Ion Battery in Australia

Inventor and Entrepreneur Elon Musk is no stranger to making big claims and backing them up, and it looks like a Twitter callout is going to turn into yet another project brought to life for Musk and his Tesla brand. More than the hyper-advanced cars we all know and love, Tesla is also leading the push for better battery tech, providing clean, safe energy on small and large scales.

Now, the company is working on building the worlds largest battery, although the installation will actually be several massive batteries working together as one unit in South Australia, a state that’s struggling to provide reliable power for its nearly two million citizens. After a storm left the region in the dark last September, the state set about securing a more dependable energy source, and that’s where Musk and Tesla come into the story. After the head of Tesla’s battery division Tweeted that the company could solve the state’s power problem in 100 days, Australian entrepreneur Mike Cannon-Brookes replied asking how serious Tesla was about the claim if he could secure the money and political clearance. Musk fired back on Twitter with a definitive answer: “Tesla will get the system install and working 100 days from contract signature or its free. That serious enough for you?”

And with that, the proverbial ball was rolling. Not only does Musk want the battery to work, he wants it to look good as well, envisioning an installation people want to travel to see while it’s providing power to the state. If anybody can pull it off, we know Musk and Tesla can, and we can’t wait to see how it turns out.

The completed structure, slated to go online in 2020 will be the largest building on the planet and will make more batteries per year at this location than were made in the entire world in 2014.
